Welcome to the Victor Pro D day! Throughout the morning we will introduce you to some technologies which can: increase our students enjoyment of school offer a better report on students' progress better communication with parents. The Case Against Assistive Technology:

Assistive Technology in Schools – Digital Resources May 20, 9:00 – 11:30 9:00 – Digital Portfolios 9:20 – SET-BC Accessible Books 9:40 – Smilebox – another option for sharing student information with customized slideshows 10:00 – iPads and iPods in Special Education 10:20 – break 10:40 – hands-on practice with Digital Portfolios, Accessible Books, Smilebox, iPads and iPods

Microsoft POWERPOINT: Making a Digital Portfolio for Students For our purposes we could use PowerPoint's for: reporting on student progress for graduations for our students to use with switches, or for favourite pictures, video or music. PowerPoint's are fast and easy to create. They can be saved on the computer or burned onto a DVD (at no additional cost).

Accessible Books Accessible Books allow students to have control over reading. Students can use a switch to turn the pages of their favourite stories to hear the text read by a reader while enjoying the colourful pictures. Accessible Books can be used by any student! There is a large library of books to choose from & books can be created using programs like TarHeelreader.org, Switchit Maker or PowerPoint.

SET BC Accessible Books To find a variety of Accessible books visit: From there you can access the View the Main Accessible Books List Catalogue on the Left side tool bar. Ensure that the computer work station has either Microsoft PowerPoint or Switchit Maker installed to run the accessible book.

Smilebox is an easy way to create a slideshow of a student's progress over a term, semester or year. There is a 14 day Free Trial, where Smilebox creations can be posted on a blog or ed to friends, family, etc. To burn to a DVD or Save creations members must pay $5.99/month or $39.99/year. *Consider Student Confidentiality*

Exploration Sample Video: Iggy investigates the i-pad: Questions to consider: What are some of the education goals you have for your student? How could some of the programs be useful? What book(s) address educational goals? What books would you prefer in paper format? why? What games address educational goals? What games would you use? why? What games would be better as "non-technical" games

Technology and Communication Technology can help students find their voices. It can help them to communicate with people, to speak out loud, to organize their thoughts, or to express themselves in new ways. Website: Sample Video:
