Composition

 Our first impulse when drawing is about the subject matter  But like a character in a story you might love, the story as well as the character must be successful  Therefore we must think of an image as a whole not just as a subject

Tips  don’t make any two things the same  The “Rule of Thirds”

Don’t make any two things the same  Mix things up  Make your objects different sizes, colors, and different objects entirely  Make the spaces and gaps between objects different sizes

Rule of thirds  Imagine a 3x3 grid over your image  Place interesting things at the intersections

Still Life  Still Life is the best subject in art for learning and teaching the skills of drawing and painting. It teaches you how to look at objects and see them like an artist - with a perceptive awareness of their outline, shape, proportions, tone, color, texture, form and composition.

 with a perceptive awareness of their outline, shape, proportions, tone, color, texture, form and composition.

Step 1  Decide on a composition  Make it interesting  Zoom in or out-you do not have to include the entire still life

Step 2  Begin to sketch each object, LIGHTLY

Step 3  Once everything is correct (make sure)  Erase guide lines  Begin sketching shadows and highlights-LIGHTLY

Step 4  Begin shading (don’t get to dark to fast) It is helpful to work from the back to the front

Step 5  Add deeper contrast

Steps 1. Composition 2. Rough sketch -where do things go 3. (erase guidelines) sketch outline of shadows and highlights 4. Begin adding shading 5. Deepen contrast

Our Project  Shoe Still Life  Focus on:  Composition  Texture  Accurate representation
