Internal Migration

AIM: What the internal migration trends?  Do Now: Consider the recent terror attack in Paris. What do you think the effect will be on the treatment of immigrants/refugees in Europe (and specifically France)? Will there be a change in immigration/refugee policies?

Westward Expansion in the US  Original settlement on East Coast. Why?  trade  NAI resistance  Appalachian Mountains

Westward Expansion in the US  Why move?  Desire for new land and resources  What allows them to move?  Technology: Canals, railroads, new farming technology  Initially internal migration skipped over the Great Plains

Internal Migration US  Recent move to the Sunbelt (South) from the Rustbelt (Midwest)  Rustbelt=loss of manufacturing jobs  Interregional migration has slowed in the 21 st session  Most new jobs are in the service sector which does not favor a specific region

Soviet Union  Development of Far North (Siberia)  Wanted factories near raw goods, but not enough people to work  Forced Migration  Money/Job Incentives (failed)

Incentives for interregional migration  Brazil: Moved capital to the interior  Indonesia: Pays for migration to less populated islands

Deterring Interregional Migration  India: Strong restrictions on who can visit Assam  Designed to protect ethnic identity of Assamese

Intraregional Migration  More common than interregional  Most poplar is from rural to urban areas  w/n the US it is from the cities to suburbs

Industrial Revolution  Driving factor in rural to urban migration  Europe and North America: 1800s  Rural to urban migration is widespread in Asia currently  Pulled to the city for jobs

MDCs: Cities to Suburbs  NOT economically motivated  Lifestyle motivated (cultural)  Space, better schools, lower crime rates  Led to expansion of urban areas

New trend: Moving from urban to rural areas in MDCs  1990s  Counterurbanization: net migration from urban to rural areas  Caused by rapid expansion of urban areas  Seen in Rocky Mountain States  Enabled by communication/technology  Urban pull factors now available in rural areas
