Percy Bysshe Shelley
Born in Sussex, England, in 1792 Born a few years after William Wordsworth.
At school he was severely bullied both mentally and physically. This caused him to withdraw into his imagination. At college, he co-authored a piece called: The necessity of Atheism. In it he wrote: “… the mind cannot believe in the existence of God.” He was expelled from his college.
Parents were very upset with his actions that they demanded he forsake his beliefs, including: Vegetarianism, Political radicalism, Sexual freedom. Elopes with 16 year old Harriet who his parents had explicitly forbidden him to see. He hoped to save her from committing suicide but soon got annoyed with her. They had two children together.
Wrote many political pamphlets that he distributed by way of hot-air balloons, glass bottles and paper boats. Ran off with Mary, his new love and they toured France, Germany, Switzerland and Holland.
Eventually Harriet, his first wife committed suicide. Shelly lost custody to his children and they were put into foster care. Percy Shelly died in a drowning.
So what do we learn about Shelly? 1. He was a rebel. 2. Spirit of the Revolution and free thought were the biggest passions in his life. 3. Highly emotional, both physically and mentally. 4. A lively imagination.
