Resisting Drug Pressures

Clearly understanding your values about drug use can help protect you from making poor choices.

Turn to “My Values” on page 25. Take some time to complete the worksheet. Be prepared to share your answers.

Sometimes it’s hard to stand up for your beliefs and values. We all like to be accepted by others. Some people will violate their beliefs and values and experiment with drugs just to be accepted. The problem with experimentation is that a person is at risk of addiction once drug use begins.

Once you’ve identified your values and beliefs, it’s important to have skills to resist pressure.

What are some techniques that can be used to resist peer pressure?

Resistance techniques include: Being assertive and clear with your message. Suggesting an alternative action. Saying NO with conviction. Using body language that supports your words. Making excuses or giving reasons to support your decision. Removing yourself from the situation. Delaying your decision.

You will be in pairs and each group with get an “Asserting Myself” scenario. Follow the directions to write a roleplay, making sure to practice!

Turn to “Roleplay Evaluation” on page 26. As each pair performs their roleplay, use the “Roleplay Evaluation” sheet to assess the effectiveness of the resistance skills used.

Knowing and clearly stating your beliefs and values about drug use will help you stay drug free.
