Building Curriculum A Lesson in How to Lesson

Syllabus 101: Construction and Layout Things to Include Course name, course instructor, office location, , office hours, class location & meeting times Course Goals/Basic Intro Info Highlight main content, activities, plans, etc. Keep it brief, get them hooked. Grade breakdown/system. How the Pass/NoPass works, and how they should discuss grading in the FIG. (Required vs. Optional) Attendance Policies (CC Class, 1:1s, Events, etc.) Note on Respect/Classroom Expectations. Overview of Assignments Accessible Education Information (testing, disabilities, policies) Day by Day Calendar (Class content, due dates, etc.)

Mapping Your Course Content Including Resource, Speakers, etc. (Study Abroad, 2 year plan, etc.) Make a list of Lessons you want to include. Examples: Study Abroad information, Two Year Plan/Academic Advising, Library Day, Counseling/Resources, Midterms/Study tactics, Etc. Coordinate with faculty to balance these lessons with their intended content. Plan ahead to ensure neither side is neglected. Check to make sure your plans are clear, reasonable, and complete. Keep your FIG students in mind/leave room to adjust for their needs. Reserve some time or space to personalize your plans based on the feedback you get from your students. Do they need Canvas help? Or are they ok? Collaboration makes everyone happy.

Sample Time Share/ How to Share Teaching Does your faculty want to work with you? Or divide and conquer? Have the conversation in advance and make sure you’re both comfortable! Example tactics: 10 minutes a class on How to College/ campus resources taught by the FA. Alternate who takes the lead week by week. Move resources/how to college to outside class. Include it in your One on Ones, and have them learn on an as needed basis through office hours.

Building a Lesson Plan Time Management/Content 50min: Warm-up, Main event, Review Icebreakers, schedule events/brainstorm, review difficult topics from class Housekeeping tactics Start of Day information, or end of class reminders. Weekly s Activities Know what materials you will need. Consider setting up in advance Ask yourself: Would they ACTUALLY want to do this activity? Would it be beneficial? Know Your Room/People/Accessibility Course Materials Example handouts/lessons are on the FA Resources page!FA Resources

Q & A What kind of activities could you do in your College Connections class to help expand on your FIG’s theme? How are you planning on structuring your CC class? Returners: Is there any system you would recommend?
