March 2010 Pharmacy-Automated Dispensing Interface System (BOP)

Describe the Pharmacy-Automated Dispensing Interface System (BOP) –Menu Options –Interaction between options Proper set up Identify common pharmacy issues in EHR Course Objectives

BOP Bi-directional transmission of patient data between RPMS and an automated medication dispensing machine (ADM) system, e.g. Pyxis, Omnicell. Impacts all disciplines Providers Nurses Pharmacy Overview

Functionality Data in the BOP QUEUE file is placed into HL7 messages. The network administrator determines the TCP/IP addresses, an IP address for each ADM System device, and an IP address for each RPMS IHS facility.

Functionality Map Automated Dispensing System to RPMS drug file via Internal Entry Numbers of each drug (IENs) Monitors itself and reliably keeps itself running. Transmits ADT info to the ADM system real-time. Transmits patient orders to the ADM system real-time.

Data Transmitted from RPMS ADT Outpatient Demographic Data Orders

Data Received by RPMS Dispensed Medications “Keep Alive” messages Acknowledgements of data received

BOP User Menu Options BOP BOP User Menu... [BOPMENU] –DCF BOP Drug Configuration... – PAT Display Queue for a patient – SEND Send One Patient ADT/Orders to Interface – SHOW Show Ready Queue – SITE Site Parameter Edit – TRB Interface Trouble Shooting...

BOP IRM Menu Options MON Start the Monitor PAT Display Queue for a patient SEND Send One Patient ADT/Orders to Interface SHOW Show Ready Queue SITE Site Parameter Edit STOP Stop the Interface TRB Interface Trouble Shooting...

Site Parameters Manage what data should go across –ADT –Outpatient and Inpatient –Orders –Types of orders IP Addresses and sockets

Troubleshooting No Orders coming across –Check Show Ready Queue –Check Automated Dispensing System if working –Send one patients orders –Is RPMS working? –Is the network up?
