In general, if a noun ends in: -a then it is singular and feminine Example: mochila (bookbag) -o then it is singular and masculine Example: cuaderno (notebook) s then it is plural Example: mochilas (bookbags) Example: cuadernos (notebooks)

Exceptions Sometimes there are nouns that end in an –a and are considered masculine words: Example: mapa (map) is considered a masculine word! Sometimes there are words that end in an –o and are considered feminine words: Example: mano (hand) is considered a feminine word!

Exceptions 2 There are words that end –e and these can be either feminine or masculine! Coche – car = M Leche – milk -F There are nouns that end in a consonant and these can also be either masculine or feminine! Examen – exam / test – M

If you’re saying

Breathe Be thankful that you are in 7th grade and that this is a mini. There are rules that make figuring out the gender of these words easy! But for today all you have to do is remember the following 2 rules and 3 words.

Rules If the word ends in –ción or -ión the noun is feminine. If the noun ends in –tad, -dad, or –umbre the noun is feminine. Suerte = luck; lucky – (F) Sol = (sun) – (M) Frijol = (bean) –(M)

Simple!

Part 2: Making nouns plural

Making nouns plural If a noun ends in a vowel add an –s to make it plural. la página (page)  las páginas el cuaderno (notebook) los cuadernos la mochila (bookbag) las mochilas el bolígrafo (pen) los bolígrafos

If a noun ends in a consonant add –es to make it plural. el señor  los señores el papel  los papeles el examen  los exámenes

Ojo! If the word ends in a z, first change the z to a c and then add –es el lápiz  los lápices el pez los peces If a word ends in n or s and there is a written accent on the last vowel do two things. Add -es and drop the accent. la nación las naciones el francés  los franceses

What if I want to refer to a specific noun(s)?
