--PLAYED A LESS IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE REVOLUTION THAN DID LEON TROTSKY A FIRM MARXIST. STALIN --STALIN BECAME GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY. LENIN’SSTALIN --AFTER LENIN’S DEATH STALIN AND TROTSKY JOCKEYED FOR POSITION.

TROTSKY --TROTSKY AND STALIN DIFFERED ON MOST ISSUES. --STALIN PUT HIS OWN SUPPORTERS IN TOP JOBS AND ISOLATED TROTSKY WITHIN THE PARTY. STALIN BECOMES LEADER OF THE U.S.S.R. TROTSKYSTALIN

TROTSKY TROTSKY FLED THE COUNTRY AND CONTINUED TO CRITICIZE STALIN. IN 1940 TROTSKY WAS MURDERED BY A STALINIST AGENT IN MEXICO.

STALIN ONCE IN POWER, STALIN SET OUT TO MAKE THE SOVIET UNION INTO A MODERN INDUSTRIAL POWER. FIVE-YEAR PLANS- FIVE-YEAR PLANS- AIMED AT BUILDING HEAVY INDUSTRY, IMPROVING TRANSPORTATION, AND INCREASING FARM OUTPUT. THE GREAT PURGE THE GREAT PURGE- REIGN OF TERROR BY STALIN.

Stalin’s Five Year Plan In 1922 Stalin takes control of the economy, introducing rapid industrialization and consolidation for unrealistic development.

“We are 50 to 100 years behind the advanced countries, we must cover this distance in five years. Either we do this or they will crush us.” -Stalin, 1931

The Great Purge Anyone suspected of treason or “anti-Soviet thinking” are exiled to work camps called the ‘gulag in Siberia.

The Great Purge Secret police used to round up high ranking military officials, scientists, artists, priests, intellectuals and almost every original member of the Bolshevik party.

Stalin’s Death Increasingly paranoid and delusional. Orders construction of four giant prison camps built for Soviet Jews. Dies March 5, 1953 before they are completed.

Stalin’s Death Estimated 60 million people. 1 million executed for political “offences.” 9.5 million deported, exiled or imprisoned in work camps. 18 million sent to the ‘gulag, never seen again. Other estimates have 28 million dead including 18 million sent to the ‘Gulag.
