Bringing Literacy to Life through the Arts Shannon Green Fifth Grade Reading/ELA/Social Studies Teacher East Aiken School of the Arts LEADERS IN LITERACY CONFERENCE

Purpose The purpose of today’s session is to provide educators with various strategies to present reading, writing, and social studies content to students through arts integration.

Norms Silent cellular devices Be respectful of others in the session Ask questions for clarification

Learning Objectives Each participating educator will: 1. Understand that reading and writing should be used equally to create a balanced literacy classroom. 2. Obtain arts integrated strategies for reading and writing. 3. Obtain resources for lessons through project based learning. 4. Provide quality vocabulary instruction using arts integrated techniques.

Essential Question How will the information and resources presented in this session impact our ability as educators to motivate and differentiate reading, writing, and social studies instruction for every student?

Motivate, Motivate, Motivate! Our students are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. The arts engage students, thus making the learning process much more memorable! Research suggests that the link to increased retention is due to the fact that each time a student uses information in a new and different way, they embed the information slightly more into memory. –Association of American Educators

The Arts in Your Classroom Creativity, the highest form of intelligence, is encouraged when the arts are connected to student learning. Drama Visual Art/Project based learning Dance/Movement Music

The Boy on the Porch by Sharon Creech Communicating Through Art The boy rapped a rhythmic tune against the wooden ladder, on the sides and rungs, a livelier, louder rhythm, full of life and joy, like a dozen dancers dancing on a wooden floor, or a dozen drummers drumming.

The Boy on the Porch by Sharon Creech Students created art that communicated a scene from the book, a feeling or emotion, their history (where they’re from), or a memory. Differentiate by offering options for varied learning styles: Clay Sculptures Paintings or Illustrations Poetry or Songs
