Position vs. Time Graphs Stationary Constant positive velocity Constant negative velocity

Position vs.Time graphs Changing velocity (increasing) Changing velocity (decreasing)

If you want to know what the average velocity is calculate the slope. Slope = Δd / Δt =Vave Δd = df - di Δt = tf - ti

Using slope to predict motion On a position vs. time graph If slope is 0, then velocity is 0. If slope is positive, velocity is constant. If slope is negative, velocity is constant in the opposite direction. If slope is changing, velocity is changing. (i.e. you are accelerating)

Velocity vs. Time Graphs The slope of the line tells you the ____________ of the object. The “area under the curve” represents the change in position or ____________of an object. displacement acceleration

For t = 0s to t = 3 s velocity stays at 50 m/s. V (m/s) For t = 0s to t = 3 s velocity stays at 50 m/s. 50 So acceleration is 0! t (s) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -25 What is the velocity from t=3s to t=5s? Acceleration? v = -25 m/s a = 0 m/s2

Area = base × height Base = 3 s Height = 50 m/s Δd=150 m 3s × 50 m/s V (m/s) Area = base × height Base = 3 s Height = 50 m/s 50 Δd=150 m 3s × 50 m/s t (s) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -25
