APAN Lambda BoF 1 TWAREN/TAIWANLight : Research and Development 2005 / 01 /26 Te-Lung Liu

APAN Lambda BoF 2 The Evolution of TANet2  TANet2 is a national research network, in operation since 1998 to serve academia and research institutions. TANet2 is an MOU partner of Internet2 and part of APAN-TW.  Since 2004, a new, 20G backbone network, TWAREN (TaiWan Advanced Research and Education Network) has been in operation. It serves the same clientele.  The international circuits are redesigned, with state-of-the-art optical technologies served by TAIWANLight.

APAN Lambda BoF 3 TWAREN Topology Maps Production Network Lease-based optical backbone at 20 Gbps. Dual vendor-provisioning at 10 Gbps each. Optical Network Acquired dark fiber segments. APAN Lambda BoF 5 Lightpath Definition  A lightpath is a point-to-point channel which the NIC takes as a dedicated line with a given service level guarantee.  SONET/SDH TDM channel  WDM wavelength  MPLS layer-2 VPN  any concatenation of the above  Only one hop between the endpoints of a lightpath!

APAN Lambda BoF 6 Lightpath Provisioning

APAN Lambda BoF 7 Lightpath Customers  Video streaming testbed among NCTU, NTU, NCKU and NSYSU.  Medical images and data transmission between NTU Hospital and its Yunlin division.  Volumes of data synchronization between the headquarter of National Health Research Institutes in Zhunan and its office in Taipei.

APAN Lambda BoF 8 Collaboration with Canarie  NCHC's Lab assists with Canarie in developing SDH version of UCLP (user- controlled lighpath) software. APAN Lambda BoF 12 January 2005 Upgrade  In partnership with Chunghwa Telecom. (Its overseas division, TWGate). New circuit due for completion by mid February.  New circuit comes with installation of ONS devices at five sites:  STTL, Palo Alto, LA, Chicago, NYC  In Chicago, there is one more colo-site at Equinix besides STARLight.  Combined bandwidths for the Trans-Pacific links (un-protected) is 4.5 Gb/s, each at 2.5 Gb/s shy.

APAN Lambda BoF 14 Virtual Topology Design  TAIWANLight now connects to the TWAREN optical network instead of the production Layer 3 router.  The Equinix in Chicago is considered as a bypass site  A total of 23 ONSs are included for this new layout of lightpaths  Provides backup routes and separate peerings

APAN Lambda BoF 18 Features of New TAIWANLight  There are direct lightpaths from Taipei, Hsinchu, and Tainan to the five colo-sites for peering, each one has at least one protected path  Only one hop from Taiwan to US!  More reliable and load-balanced  Besides commodity peering lightpaths, lots of bandwidth are left for future possible collaboration  Inter-domain lighpath exchange  HD video streaming  Other E-Science applications

APAN Lambda BoF 19 Thank you ! Comments and Suggestions?
