Sequence of Events : The United States Enters WWI

Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand - WW1 officially begins… - The U.S. chooses to stay neutral.

Step 1: When the war starts, President Woodrow Wilson announces a policy of neutrality.

Both sides use propaganda during the war.(information used to influence opinion) Step 2:

The U.S. tried to trade with both sides but because of Britain's blockade of Germany, they were forced to trade mostly with the Allies. Step 3

Germany uses unrestricted submarine warfare to retaliate against Britain (merchant, naval, cruise ships) EXAMPLE: Sinking of the Lusitania: British passenger ship with 128 Americans on board. Step 4

Step 5 Zimmermann Telegram: Telegram sent to Mexico from Germany in January of 1917, asking them to enter the war against the United States.

Russian Revolution (Civil war in Russia causes them to pull out of WW1) Step 6

Step 7 Germany sinks four American merchant ships in March of 1917.

Step 8 April 6th, U.S. joins the Allies and declares war
