Imperialism Scramble for Africa- European countries fighting for control of countries in Africa Competition for colonies in Asia, Latin America, middle East and southern Europe The more colonies you had the more rich and powerful you were. Great Britain and France had the most colonies.

Militarism The use of new weapons of war such as submarines, airplanes, machine guns, artillery, tanks and grenades

Alliances Central Powers were Austria, Germany and Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria Allies, was Great Britain, France and Russia later Italy joined them. Belgium, Spain and Switzerland wanted neutrality The idea was that if one country gets attacked the rest had to join the fight.

Powder Keg of Europe Russia wanted to control the Balkans. Bosnian Serbs wanted independence from Austria Serbia wanted to annex Bosnia Austria wanted to crush Serbian Influence in Bosnia End of the Franco Prussia war Germany took Alsace-Lorraine from France which lead to Great trouble between the two countries

Behind the Scenes France was still bitter over the loss of Alsace- Lorraine. Great Britain sees Germany as both an economic and military threat. Russia wants access to the Mediterranean through Turkey. Russian wants more influence in the Balkans.

The Trigger Event Killing of Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand The first world war began in August It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 Result: 1. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 2 Russia got involved to defend Serbia. 3. Germany seeing Russia mobilizing, declared war on Russia. 4 France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria- Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into war. Then Japan entered the war. Later, Italy and the United States would enter on the side of the allies.
