Education Oversight Committee At its February 9, 2015 meeting, the Education Oversight Committee (EOC) adopted the “Profile of the South Carolina Graduate”, a set of skills and characteristics that are critical for all graduates of high schools in South Carolina. Originally written by a group of South Carolina school district superintendents in 2012, the profile has also been adopted and approved by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators Superintendent’s Roundtable, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness.

*“Literacy, in any form, advances a person’s ability to effectively and creatively use and communicate information.” This session will focus on the skill sets students need to develop in order to succeed in the information age, as suggested in the profile of a South Carolina graduate and the 21st century learner skills checklist. Participants will leave with a working definition of “Digital Literacy,” an overview of the SC graduate profile, and a supplemental list of ideas for incorporating “Digital Literacy” components in the everyday classroom. * Barbara, Barbara R., and Suzanne L. Flannigan. "Connecting the Digital Dots: Literacy of the 21st Century." Connecting the Digital Dots: Literacy of the 21st Century. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Nov

What can you do to become more digitally literate? Join blogs or professional learning networks to get connected to digital tools and other teachers incorporating digital tools. Start with easy technology tools and work your way up. Provide choices and have students justify their choice of tools when completing a task, allow them to learn the technology on their own.

Creativity and Innovation in the Classroom Mind Maps: Mindup, Bubbl us, MindMapFree, Read, Write, and Think – Graphic Organizers Mind Maps: MindupBubbl usMindMapFreeRead, Write, and Think – Graphic Organizers On-line video creator: Animoto On-line Presentation tool: E-Maze On-Line Presentation tool: Prezi PowerPoint add-on: Office Mix

Mind Mapping Ideas for the classroom Have students: ELA - create a tree diagram that shows the problem, solution, setting, and characters from a story that they have read on their own Math - create a diagram that classifies geometric shapes SS - create a cause and effect chart for the World Wars Science - Use a tree diagram to show the classification in the 5 kingdoms of life and the levels of organization under each *All of these diagram tools can be found under the Read, Write, Think website Read, Write, and Think – Graphic Organizers - nizer&sort_order=relevance

Timeline ideas for the classroom Have students … ELA –create a timeline that depicts the major events in an authors life that influenced the author’s writing Math – create a timeline that shows time increments for 24 hours, then use the timeline to answer questions in hours ago, hours till, hours in between Science – create a timeline that shows the category 5 hurricanes that have occurred in the last 50 years SS – create a timeline that shows the events that led up to the last big economic crisis in the United States Website – TIMELINE -

Knowing How to Learn Bing a Day – Create a question pertinent to your subject area that requires students to search the internet for the answer. For instance, what is the 2015 graduation rate for the state of South Carolina? Parameters for this activity?

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Coding/programming in the classroom. Have students… ELA – write a technical directions for a simple program. Math – draw angles, geometric shapes, and use the distributive property when looping Science – use logic and sequential order to accomplish a task SS – program a course that navigates the Lewis and Clark expedition Hour of Code – Star Wars

Hands on coding activity

Remember… let the content drive the activity, NOT the tools. Join blogs or professional learning networks to get connected with digital tools and other teachers incorporating digital tools. Start with easy technology tools and work your way up Provide choices or better yet have students justify their choice of tools when completing a task and has to learn the technology on their own.
