Vocabulary  Unconventional  Sessions  Out of the ordinary  Gatherings held for a special purpose

Guiding Comprehension  Why do you think the other girls stopped going to track practice but Jackie continued to go?  Why do you think Percy Harris arranged for Jackie to join George Ward’s team? TThe other girls stopped going to track practice but Jackie kept going because she loved to run and wanted to be better. PPercy Harris arranged that Jackie could join George Ward’s team because he saw that she was a dedicated runner and should receive coaching.

Judgments and Inferences  Do you think Mr. Ward was being honest with Jackie when he said, just keep coming to practice and you'll get better? Why or why not?  What does Jackie mean by practices were pressure free, but there were rules? YYes, Mr. Ward was being honest because it’s true with almost everyone that if they keep practicing, they will improve on what they are trying. JJackie means her coach wanted them to be disciplined about their training, but didn't pressure the girls to win.

Vocabulary  Sprints  Conditioning  Oppressive  Mimicked  Short races at top speed  Actions done for the purpose of becoming more physically fit.  Uncomfortable, difficult to bear  Imitated

Inferences and Compare and Contrast  Jackie practiced jumping on the days she didn’t have practice. What might other kids have done on those days?  Why do you think Jackie never told Mr. ward that she wanted to jump?  Other kids might have watched television instead of practicing on days when there was no practice.  Jackie never told Mr. ward she wanted to jump because she might not have been good enough.

Vocabulary  Squad  Legislation  A small group of people organized for an activity.  A law or group of laws.

Drawing Conclusions  Why do you think no one in town had helped girls interested in sports?  Why do you think congress passed Title IX?  No one in town helped girls get interested in sports because people did not believe girls should play sports; people did not believe girls wanted to play sports.  Congress passed this act because girls at the time did not have the same athletic opportunities as boys, and congress wanted to create equal opportunities.
