Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation modes (types) of research essays Informative Mode: simply reports information; objective and “report-like.” The Tips/Advice Mode: gives suggestions based on findings to a broad audience; while persuasive in nature, it is not specific and focused enough. Argument/Persuasive Mode: assertive, states a specific side of an issue (on a focused topic), and then persuades the reader to change his/her mind.

Focus on a specific issue (not just a topic area). Use research as support for your position—not your own knowledge and experience. We’ll be discussing your topic and the controversies you have found about that topic. There will be a sample argument essay to view in doc sharing. Note: if you cannot find sources for your topic, it may not be a suitable for this class. Likewise, if you cannot find a clear debate in the sources you found (authors who take opposing positions), rethink your topic The Unit 3 Project: an APA style title page.
