COORDINATE THE INTERFACE OF EGGS AND VANILLA, AVOIDING AN OVERRUN SCENARIO TO THE BEST OF YOUR SKILLS AND ABILITIES. Is it using big words & lots of words? Is it employing complicated sentences? See example from the WC below: What makes good, formal writing?

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation WHY IS KNOWING YOUR AUDIENCE IMPORTANT IN GOOD WRITING? audience

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation DOES YOUR ACADEMIC AUDIENCE WANT TO KNOW YOUR OPINION IN GOOD, FORMAL, ACADEMIC ESSAY WRITING? audience Your audience seeks information found in current research only! NO! YES!

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation WHAT IS YOUR AUDIENCE LOOKING FOR IN YOUR PERSUASIVE ESSAY? audience Your audience seeks information found in current research— enough good information to persuade

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation modes (types) of research essays Informative Mode: simply reports information; objective and “report-like.” The Tips/Advice Mode: gives suggestions based on findings to a broad audience; while persuasive in nature, it is not specific and focused enough. Argument/Persuasive Mode: assertive, states a specific side of an issue (on a focused topic), and then persuades the reader to change his/her mind.

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation THE TOPIC IS CONTROVERSIAL YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN THE TOPIC what makes a good persuasive paper topic, four traits: THE TOPIC IS RESEARCHABLE THE TOPIC IS REASONABLY NARROW the ISSUE

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation IS THIS A GOOD ARGUMENTATIVE TOPIC? DRUG WARS HURT COMMUNITIES, CAUSE MANY DEATHS, AND ARE COSTLY TO THE PRISON SYSTEM RESTRAINING ORDERS FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE ARE TOO LOOSELY ALLOCATED; THEY DESTROY REPUTATIONS, AND HARM FAMILIES. U.S. BORDER CROSSINGS RULES SHOULD BE ENFORCED what makes a good persuasive paper topic Is the topic is researchable? Does the topic argue a point and persuade? Is the topic is reasonably narrow?

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation  What is the controversy you are discussing, and does it have two clear sides?  What do you want done about it?  What are the (list three) issues?  Who can fix it?  Why should “they” (be specific, define “they”) fix it?  How should it be fixed? questions to help narrow your focus on your persuasive topic

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SOURCES EDUCATE, PERSUADE AND ENGAGE THE READER WITH NEW WAYS OF THINKING ABOUT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. how research helps support our ideas Research builds a solid body of information to show particular truths and prove points.

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation what constitutes reliable information? Reliable sources can be found in scholarly and professional journals and trade publications. These sources go through a rigorous process of peer-review in which other academic and professional experts review and evaluate the writing for content, integrity and structure.

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation what information is considered unreliable? which dots are okay? Search engines (like Google, Yahoo or MSN) are free to anyone with access to the Internet, but there are no review or evaluation standards, and since nearly anyone can publish web pages, the information is not considered reliable.GoogleYahooMSN Wikipedia Wikipedia is NOT a scholarly site. Although there are some reputable, scholarly contributors, it is an online encyclopedia that anyone (regardless of credentials) can edit. (Do not use Wiki!)

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation the library

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation your final project – a persuasive research paper:  Have a specific target audience in mind (you know who it is!).  Be assertive and persuasive.  Focus on a specific issue (not just a topic area).  Use research as support for your position—not your own knowledge and experience.  Consider the opposition’s points, mention them in first body paragraph, then refute them.

Unit 2: Writing Styles & Library Orientation a look ahead - unit 3 The Unit 3 seminar will focus on:  Research and source evaluation, as well as logical fallacies. We’ll be discussing your topic and the controversies you have found about that topic. There will be a sample argument essay to view in doc sharing.  Note: if you cannot find sources for your topic, it may not be a suitable for this class.  Likewise, if you cannot find a clear debate in the sources you found (authors who take opposing positions), rethink your topic  The Unit 3 Project: an APA style title page. There will be a sample project to view in doc sharing.
