Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for premature deaths and costly hospitalizations in Memphis, TN. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for premature deaths and costly hospitalizations in Memphis, TN. CVD ( heart disease and stroke) leading causes of death CVD ( heart disease and stroke) leading causes of death Community Health Indicators –overview of health status Community Health Indicators –overview of health status

Background  Prevalence rate 27.3% for heart disease in Memphis  31.8% of blacks and 23.5% of whites report a physician diagnosed them with heart disease  Prevalence rate for 37.3%hypertension  Overall, 40.9% HTN rate for blacks and 34.5% whites

Background National estimated prevalence of CVD is 6.6%, with little variability between blacks and whites

Purpose of Assessment Cardiovascular risks, depressive symptoms, and quality of life health indicators (N=82) of community residents and congregants in the zip were used to characterize health and health risk of the target population.

Demographic Characteristics of Residents an Congregants

Methods and Procedures Assessment Instruments  Health Risk Appraisal (HRA)  Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD)

Results: Body Mass Index (n=81) Mean (±9.18) kg/m 2 Range to 71 kg/m 2

Results: Mean Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressures(n=77)

Results: Cigarette Smoking(n=64)

Results: Mean Blood Glucose and Cholesterol Levels(n=59)

Results: Nutritional Intake(n=80)

Results: Physical Activity (N=78)

Results: Depression Health Risk Indicators (N=68)

Results: Life Satisfaction ( N=79)

Conclusions Major health risk indicators include: ObesityObesity Diets high in fatDiets high in fat Lack of sufficient physical activityLack of sufficient physical activity

Implications Health indicators suggest that community participants need health promotion strategies to address nutrition, smoking cessation, overweight/obesity, and physical inactivity. Improving these risks could reduce cardiovascular risk in this population.
