Communication Styles “I know you believe you understand what you think I just said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” Anonymous Read the quote by “anonymous” 5 mins. Introduce the topic. And handout the Communication Styles Worksheet Point out that we can tell very little about the 4 people seated at the table. The only clues we have relate to body language, and if we draw conclusions from we see we run a risk of being incorrect. If we know our communication style, we will get additional insight into the environment in which we are most comfortable and can work with others most productively. If we pick up on the clues from the communication styles of others we have an opportunity to connect more often with them and to have them connect with us. Not everyone in our clubs (or in an audience at any given time) has the same preferred communications style. Different people have very different ways they prefer to give and receive information. Which means that the kind of delivery that engages some people may send others scrambling for the exits. Let’s find out what our communication style is. 8 to 10 mins. Facilitator: Follow Facilitator Notes and give directions on how to score.

Review key words and concepts in Four Communication Styles….Understanding Style Differences handout for DOER Style People will probably had training in Communication Styles at some point in work, at Zonta programs, etc. so be quick and brief. Normal Communication Pattern Leadership High Stress or Negative Situations Slogan Get from 1 or 2 participants their examples. Ask: “ What do you see or hear that fits this description?”How do you know it when you see/hear it in the people around you?.“ Cover all four styles. Move quickly to put them in teams of four for an activity.

Move quickly to put them in teams of four for an activity.

Move quickly to get them in teams of four for an activity.

Normal Communication Pattern Leadership High Stress or Negative Situations Slogan Get from 1 or 2 participants their examples. Ask: “ What do you see or hear that fits this description?”How do you know it when you see/hear it in the people around you?. “ Count off to make teams of four for an activity.

Four Communication Styles ….Application and Connecting Connecting with others “where they are” Getting them to connect with you 5 mins. Handout Four Communication Styles….Application and Connecting. Review: Style at their Best How to Listen How to Connect Preparation for them for small team activity.. Activity set up on next slide.

Small Group Activity Form small teams with at least one person with each communication style Select an example of a time communication did not go well in a Zonta meeting Use the Four Communication Styles—Application and Connecting Develop a plan of how you can use your new knowledge in the future in a similar setting. Prepare to report your findings Timing: 5 minutes to form teams and get them moved to separate tables. Depending on the total number of participants, form 4 to 5 teams. Make sure there is at least one of each style on each team. Give teams 10 minutes to select a communication example.and to develop a plan for change. 5 mins for large group callout. Ask for volunteers to talk about their plans. 20 mins. total
