Graphs Linear Functions with slope-intercept Form Opening: Can you see the slope in here? This is the breath taking Mount Everest The highest peak in the world Elevation: 29,028 feet Location: Nepal & Tibet

The slope of a line is a measure of how “tilted” the line is. You can said slope of a line is steepness by a ratio. Move forward 100 feet drop 6 feet

In math slope = rise/run m = Or

Possibilities for slopes Positive slope The line rises from left to right slope = rise/run = 2/3 m is positive

Negative slope The line falls from left to right slope = rise/run = - 2/1 m is negative

Zero slope The line is horizontal Undefined slope The line is vertical

Slope-Intercept form of a line: y = mx + b m = slope of the line b = y - intercept Graph linear equation Step 1: Plot the y - intercept Step 2:Obtain the second point using slope, m and write m as a fraction

Example 1: y = 2x -2 graph the equation –Plot the y intercept -2 –Slope is 2, so move up two units along the y-axis and side way one unit to get the second point

Example 2 y = 2x graph the equation –Plot the y intercept 0 –Using the slope 2 to get second point

What will happen ? When m and b are changed? Verify the slope formula: m = y 2 - y 1 /x 2 - x 1 with Geogebra Describe the graphical displays Check your work with Geogebra
