Presentation transcript:

Greeting Task On your desk you will find our learning objective muddled up. The first person to put the learning objective into the correct order wins a Green eref.

The Characteristics of God What is this unit about? In this unit we will be thinking about who God actually is. Is God one form or many? What words can we use to describe God? What is God like? Why are we learning about this? If God does exist, we need to know what kind of God people are believing in. We need to have an idea of what God is like in order to be able to understand and question things like suffering and evil in the world. To be understanding of how different religions and cultures can view God in different ways.

Our Learning Journey

Pictionary Vs. Articulate You are going to work in pairs and take it in turns to be the one drawing/describing and the one guessing. The pair to guess first will win a Green eref. You will be shown a word. Depending on what you are told, you will either need to draw it (Pictionary) or describe it (Articulate). You will only have 30 seconds.

Pictionary (draw) Crutches

Articulate (describe) Paddle

Articulate (describe) Noah’s Ark

Pictionary (draw) Battery Hen

Title: Ways to Understand God Learning Objective: We will be able to give ways that can be used to understand God. I can Explore how words and images are used to try and understand God. I can Explain why some religions do not allow images of God. I can Evaluate whether it is better to use words or images to understand God.

Pair Challenge In your pairs you have 1 minute to write down as many words to describe God as you can think of. tch?v=HLeZBXTJt8E

Images of God Stand by the image in the room that you think most reflects how you would view God. What do you think the image is trying to tell us about God? Does the image match up with any of the words we came up with as a class to describe God?

Have we met any of our success criteria yet? Learning Objective: We will be able to give ways that can be used to understand God. I can Explore how words and images are used to try and understand God. I can Explain why some religions do not allow images of God. I can Evaluate whether it is better to use words or images to understand God.

The 99 Beautiful Names How many do you think you could remember? Muslims believe that Allah is eternal (without limits in time). Any attempt to capture Allah in an image is an attempt to limit God. It is an insult to create an image of God and an image to those who worship him as it is suggesting they worship something with limits. Instead, they have the 99 names for Allah to show his qualities. They use geometric shapes to decorate their mosques.

Are we meeting our success criteria? Learning Objective: We will be able to give ways that can be used to understand God. I can Explore how words and images are used to try and understand God. I can Explain why some religions do not allow images of God. I can Evaluate whether it is better to use words or images to understand God.

Stop and Think ‘Imagine that any words used to describe God were banned.’ What would be... A Plus A Minus Something Interesting
