Reading to Draw No Tech Game

Concept of game In first grade we talk about how to use pictures to find out what a story is talking about. We use picture clues to find out what words mean. This game will teach students that a picture can give you a lot of information about a story.

Objective To demonstrate the ability to understand the written word and put it into a picture.

Directions Collaborate with a team to draw a picture to represent a sentence or phrase. A time limit will be applied. We will have 3 or 4 teams. Share the picture with another team to see if they can figure out the main idea of the sentence or phrase. If the team figures it out they receive a point. Use a punch card to keep track of points. The first to fill their punch card (5) gets to choose a special treat for the class. Ex. Recess, game day, movie etc…

Directions If the other team guessed correctly the team that drew the picture will receive a ribbon to post on a progress line. This will be put on the board and it will stay there for as long as you want to play the game. Ex. 1 week, nine weeks etc.. The picture will be posted as well, the pictures will rotate for each round. At the end of that time the team with the most ribbons gets to choose the treat for the class. All teams will draw at the same time. One at a time will show a picture to another team. The team that is left will be the judge. After the team guesses the judges will determine if they have the correct main idea.

What you need Index cards Crayons/colored pencils Drawing paper Shoe box or something to put index cards in, to choose from. Ribbons for teams/paper ones work fine Punch cards for points. One for each team. Each team will make a name for their team.

Choosing Teams: Use index cards as punch cards and as they guess the picture they get a hole punch. Guessing correctly five times will allow them to choose an activity for the class. This game is played during the week once or twice a day. It can be a morning activity or a fill in because is doesn’t take a long time to play.

Collaborating to draw a picture of their story card.

Showing another team their picture to figure out the main idea. This team will have 1 minute to discuss and 30 seconds to team talk about what they see in the picture and then will present it to the judges A third team is the judge.

Awards for drawing a picture that corresponds with the story and the other team was able to figure it out. The pictures will stay up until we draw again. This is the progress line the students will see.

No-Tech Game Students were engaged and enjoyed the collaborative aspect of the game. Students worked hard for a hole punch in their card and the ribbon to hang up next to their picture. If I had time I would have shown more of the progress bar with the ribbons. Everyone was engaged and there wasn’t anyone not wanting to draw a good picture.
