Locating on the Earth There are two basic ways to locate something on the Earth’s surface, relative location and Absolute locations.
 A. Globe - A scale model of the Earth.  1. Globe vocabulary.
Aim: How do maps help us navigate our way around the world?
Finding locations on the Earth. Latitude (parallels) imaginary lines drawn around the earth parallel to the equator definition – the distance north or.
Latitude and Longitude. Relative Location Relative location is the proximity of a location in relation to another point of interest. It is about where.
Finding your way in the world. Latitude lines are imaginary lines that run EAST/WEST (horizontally) around the earth's surface. Think of latitude like.
Book Definition In your own words… Picture Latitude Distance in degrees north or south of the equator.

Using Latitude and Longitude.  Relative location: describing the location of a place in relation to another place.  Absolute location: exact location.

Maps, Maps, and More Maps! Did I mention that we are going to be learning about Maps?

Does Anyone Know What the Problem with this Map is?

What Would be the BEST way to view a map of the World?

Common Types of Maps

Location  (What does) Absolute Location (do?)  Gives the position of a place on the globe using latitude and longitude.

Location Cont.  Latitude  Imaginary Lines that run parallel to the Equator.  Think of rungs on a ladder (the things you step on)  They measure distances north or south of the equator. The equator is 0˚ and the poles are 90˚ N or S.

Location Cont.  Longitude  Imaginary lines that run north and south between the two poles.  Think of them as lines that are LONG.  Also called Meridians  Prime Meridian is 0˚ and runs through Greenwich, England. All other meridians are measured in degrees from 0 to 180 E or W from Greenwich.

Cardinal Directions- Which way is the beach?

Location Cont.  Relative Location  Gives the location of a place in relation to other places  EX: California is north of Mexico, west of Arizona and Nevada, and south of Oregon.

Which two directional names do all of the U.S. longitude and latitude lines have?  North and East?  South and West?  West and South?  North and West?  If you guessed or thought North and West, you are correct! Do you know why?  Because the U.S. is entirely North of the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian.  North and East?  South and West?  West and South?  North and West?  If you guessed or thought North and West, you are correct! Do you know why?  Because the U.S. is entirely North of the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian.

Which Type of Location is more Accurate?  If you guessed or were thinking Absolute, you are correct!  What technology do people use every day that utilizes longitude and latitude?  GPS!  If you guessed or were thinking Absolute, you are correct!  What technology do people use every day that utilizes longitude and latitude?  GPS!

Where in the U.S.?  Answer the following in your Notebooks. Title the page: Where in the U.S.?  Take out your books and find:  Which state is located at 40˚N and 110˚W? Which type of location is this?  Which state is south of Tennessee and North Carolina, west of the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina, north of Florida, and east of Alabama? Which type of location is this?  Which city is very close to 30˚N and 90˚W? Which type of location is this?  Which state is south of Canada, west of North and South Dakota, north of Wyoming, and north and east of Idaho.
