Contemporary Science Issues Lesson 6: New medicines Task 1: Testing and using a new drug Timeline cards (4 per A4 page) In pairs, students are required to sort out the statements, arranging them in chronological order. Correct sequence can be found in the teaching notes. © 2006 Gatsby Technical Education Projects

7. Researchers select a disease and develop ideas for treatments 2. Computer modelling of drugs and screening of thousands of chemicals occurs 5. Possible drugs are made in the laboratory 1. Potential medicines are tested on cell cultures, tissue cultures and living organs (in vitro testing)

13. Toxic effects of the drug are identified 3. The chemicals are tested on animals 10. Correct doses of the drug and any side effects are noted 4. Animal testing continues

6. Clinical testing on a small number of healthy human volunteers 14. Clinical testing on a small number of patients with the illness 15. Clinical testing with a large number of patients 9. A licence is granted

11. The medicine passes the tests set down in law 12. A doctor can use the new medicine to treat an illness 8. Doctor’s patients use the drug and any side effects are monitored
