What is CARMA? The Circumpolar Monitoring and Assessment (CARMA) Network is a species network within the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) which reports to the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) Group, a sub-program under the Arctic Council of ministers

Brief history of CARMA (1) ARCTIC COUNCIL1998 the Arctic Council ministers directed CAFF to “identify elements of a program to monitor circumpolar biodiversity” and to “assess the effects of climate change on Arctic ecosystems” In Roveniemi, Finland a group funded by the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) assembled to discuss the formation and elements of a circumpolar monitoring network for Rangifer 2000 In Iceland CAFF group gathered to develop a framework for a circumpolar biodiversity monitoring program. Rangifer confirmed as key indicator species and official Network endorsed CCAF

Brief history of CARMA (2) 2001 Meeting in Minary, NH core group met and received general direction to formalize a Rangifer Monitoring Network CAFF Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) 2004 official launch of the CircumArctic Rangifer Monitoring and Assessment Network (CARMA) in Vancouver 2005 CARMA invited to become an official Network under the CBMP program Key is funding IASC NSF CCAF NEI IPY-Can (ends 2011)

CARMA 5 “PUTTING IT TOGETHER” Theme Original goal of CARMA was that we learn more by sharing data, ideas, experiences Agenda of CARMA 5 reflects CARMA’s focus on bringing together our knowledge so that we learn more about how these tundra herds function and how people who depend on the caribou and reindeer are being impacted by changes in the Human/Caribou Also wish to highlight the work that is being done, primarily by graduate students, that is providing that knowledge and hopefully ensuring that CARMA has a future
