Safe Ground Charlotte Weinberg & Adam Moll Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion 9 th December

Safe Ground design and deliver high quality, arts-based, group work programmes; holistic interventions demonstrated to impact on men’s capacity to change in a number of ways: 1.Developing empathy - becoming increasingly emotionally engaged with other people and recognising needs 2.Enhancing analysis and decision making - developing and recognising intellectual capacity and critical thinking 3.Strengthening goal setting abilities- enabling planning and preparation for future events and aims, involving others and including others’ in the process 20 years’ experience of working in criminal justice settings

Family Man Community Programme 14-session programme Delivered in probation settings Group sessions complimented by wrap-around family support package Family Man 7-week programme Considering impact of imprisonment on the whole family Student and family member develop shared resettlement plan Man Up 6-session programme Delivered in custodial or community settings Explores male identity and challenges social norms that increase risk-taking behaviour Fathers Inside 5-week programme Focus on parenting and child development Coordinates tailored resettlement services based on group’s needs

Strong relationships are a pillar of desistance theory The importance of being believed in Critical to building self-confidence and resilience Provide motivation, hope and sense of responsibility Relationship skills are vital to successful resettlement Communication, teamwork, empathy ‘Softer’ skills are more transferrable Families are a resource, NOT always “troubled” The ‘Power of Love’ Want to be appropriately included in sentence and resettlement planning

1. Arts-based learning techniques All our programmes: Break down barriers and engage reluctant learners Develop communication and teamwork skills Challenge stereotypes and attitudes, thinking and behaviour 2. Engage families and partners in a unique way Family Action Plan developed by Student with Family Supporter ‘What Next’ session brings together agencies across all pathways Increased motivation to engage with other services “It was nothing I've ever done before and I was well out of my comfort zone but I believe I can do it again.” – Family Man Graduate in Institute for Criminal Policy Research’s Family Man Evaluation (2013) “ There isn’t another programme that does what the Safe Ground programmes do. The way they work with the men, and involve their partners and children, the manner in which they create confidence, motivation, and self-efficacy is unique” – Family Interventions Senior Manager, HMP Parc (2012)

Programmes impact on a wide range of outcomes so wide range of evidence required 12 independent evaluations and reviews and routine data analysis Justice Data Lab reoffending analysis (2013): 29% reoffending rate for Family Man graduates, 42% rate for the matched control group (p = 0.1) “There could be little doubt of the enduring impact this programme had made on these men and their families or of its consequent potential to strengthen the social bonds which could contribute to subsequent desistance from crime.” – Boswell Research Fellows (2011) -and-impact

1.Timescales and the funding gap 2.Economies of scale – can smaller charities really compete? 3.Passing the buck? 1.Better coordination of services 2.Provisions for short-sentence prisoners 3.Greater focus on evidence
