cdma2000 Technology Highlights David Crowe 2012 Technology Workshop Chair

cdma2000 Market Position More than 330 operators in 122 countries Over 200 suppliers Over 625 million subscribers –Over 200 million using HRPD –Most devices shipped in 2011 included HRPD Integrates with LTE: –Many current LTE subscribers use dual-mode cdma2000 devices August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 2

3GPP2 Role Develops cdma2000 specifications Collaboration of 5 partners: –ARIB (Japan), CCSA (China), TIA (USA), TTA (Korea), TTC (Japan) –Partners publish specifications as national standards. Market Representation Partners –CDG, IPv6 Forum, Small Cell Forum, CDMA Certification Forum (CCF) August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 3

1X Rev. E Capabilities Current release is Rev. E (2009): –4x more voice capacity of Rev. 0, OR –3x more 1x data capacity, OR –70% increase in coverage EVRC-NW coder with 1/8 rate combines the benefits of EVRC-B and EVRC-WB. Many Rev. E capabilities are also available on Rev. 0 and Rev. A. August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 4

Rev. F Optimizations Air interface optimized for bursty M2M traffic: –Battery life increased 3-4 times –3x more devices can be connected directly –4x more indirectly connected devices Optimizations will benefit non-M2M capabilities such as SMS and USSD. August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 5

HRPD Capabilities Current implemented release is Rev. C (2010): –Forward link up to 14.7 Mbps (3 carriers) –Reverse link up to 3.1 Mbps (3 carriers) August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 6

M2M Capabilities cdma2000 has been used for M2M for years. Release F will allow operators to support more devices. Optimizations assume that most (not all) M2M traffic will be small, infrequent, downlink packets. August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 7

New Features USSD, compatible with GSM servers and applications Femtocells (legacy or IMS) Location Based Services (legacy or IP) SMS over HRPD Self-Organizing Networks Energy Efficiency (GREEN) MSC Pools August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 8

Card Support Most current cards are R-UIM (SIM-based) New developments focused on CSIM: –Based on UICC platform –Application, coexisting with USIM etc. August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 9

Numbering Issues Numbering was reviewed in the context of M2M: –cdma2000 is not dependent on MSISDN for data services. –Hardware identifier numbering resources are sufficient now that the transition from ESN to MEID is complete. –Card identifier numbering resources are sufficient now that the transition from UIMID to EUIMID is complete. –MIN has sufficient capacity August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 10

CDMA – LTE Interworking Many operators deploying LTE rely on cdma2000 for voice services, coverage and roaming. eHRPD is an extension of the 3GPP2 Enhanced Packet Core. Voice services generally supported using CS fallback to 1x CDMA or VCC (Voice Call Continuity). August, 2012cdma2000 Technology HighlightsSlide 11
