I chose Degrassi as my Teen Drama Series assignment because it is one of my favorite shows. Degrassi is about high school students who go through challenges and issues young adults face such as, homophobia, theft, homosexuality, pregnancy scares, sexual harassment, religion, stress, self image, suicide, etc. The main characters in degrassi are Drew Torres, Eli Goldsworthy, Fiona Coyne, Dave Turner, Zig Novak, Bianca DeSousa, Jake Martin, Mo Mashkour, Clare Edwards, Imogen Moreno, Katie Matlin, Alli Bhandari, and Adam Torres. The point of this show is to show what things you should and should not do in highschool and how people go through everyday struggles with the challenges and issues that they have.

The show mainly takes place at Degrassi Community School. The show also takes place at other places such as the characters houses, the characters main hang out coffee shop ‘The Dot’, or outside somewhere. The city that the show takes place in is Toronto, Ontario. The setting is important in this show because it shows where they have their challenges and issues the most because of sometimes depending on the people they are around.

Adam Torres is one of the more important characters in Degrassi because I believe he goes through the most challenges and issues. Adam was a female-to-male transgender teen. He has struggled with many things such as bullying, violence, death threats, acceptance, assaults, self harm, etc. Adam is step- brothers with Drew Torres and hangs out mainly with Eli Goldsworthy and Clare Edwards. Adam is a honest, humorous, and is a very loyal kind of guy. On the episode ‘Honey’, Adam dies during surgery after a car accident that he had gotten into.

Fiona Coyne is one of the main characters in Degrassi who struggles with a variety of challenges and issues. Some of these challenges and issues are going to rehab to take control of her alcoholism, being put on medication for her anxiety problems, and discovering that she is a lesbian. She is best friends with Holly J. Sinclair and is friends with Anya MacPherson, Bianca DeSousa, Mike Dallas, Drew Torres, Eli Goldsworthy, and Imogen Moreno. Fiona is talented and has a very unique sense of style. Her mother is Laura Coyne and her twin brother is Declan Coyne.

Drew Torres is a main character who struggles with many conflicts. Some of these conflicts and struggles are failing classes, dropping out of school, post traumatic stress disorder, memory loss, and light-headness. Drew is stereotyped as a popular, pretty-boy athlete. His brother is Adam Torres and his parents are Omar Torres and Audra Torres. Drew’s friends are Mike Dallas, Fiona Coyne, Clare Edwards, and Dave Turner. He dropped out of Degrassi in his first senior year, but later on returned and won the Student Government Election.

This show explores many teen issues. These teen issues are violence, bullying, alcohol usage, drugs, pregnancies, mental illnesses, verbal and sexual child abuse, self esteem and body issues, LGBT, etc. This show does and does not send a positive message to the teens today. It does send a positive message by showing how people can try and fix the conflicts and issues that they have been through. It does not send a positive message to teens today because it shows how the characters get into trouble and how they have many issues in their life.

The most viewers that Degrassi has ever had is 1.2 million viewers. I believe that this show is so popular because this show has been going on for a very long time. It also believe that it is popular because it relates to everyday life that teens struggle through and have issues with.

Degrassi is similar to the show The Secret Life of The American Teenager. Degrassi is similar to this show because they both have some of the same issues such as drug addictions, teen pregnancy, LGBT, etc. I believe that Degrassi is more popular because it is the more recent show and is more up to date. I enjoy Degrassi more because it is the most recent show comparing to The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but The Secret Life of the American Teenager was my favorite one before Degrassi had started. I believe that they a both equally teen friendly because they involve a lot of the same struggles and conflicts.
