Emergency Situations
What is the best procedure to follow in the event one of the following driving emergencies happens to you?
Tire Blowout: Grip wheel firmly, keep vehicle going straight Slow down gradually by taking foot off of gas. DO NOT BRAKE. Pull over to the side of the road
Skids; if the rear of the car starts to skid: Take foot off the gas Slowly turn in the direction the rear of the car is skidding Do not over steer
Running off the pavement: Slow down Regain control of the vehicle Steer slowly back onto the roadway when safe
Car breakdown: Try to pull off the road Raise the hood Put on emergency flashing lights Set flares
Collision is impossible to avoid: Turn away from on coming traffic Choose something that will “give” rather than something hard
Brake failure: Shift to low gear Pump brake Use emergency brake if necessary
Hydroplaning : Tires loose contact with the road surface due to a film of water between the tires and the roadway. (Braking is impossible, turning is not possible.) Grip wheel firmly steer straight ease off of gas
To avoid hydroplaning: Do not drive on badly worn tires Slow down when there is heavy rain, standing water or slush Never use cruise control during rain
Tailgating: Following to closely (no space cushion) Move to the right and let the person pass you
Highway Hypnosis: A trance like state Keep your eyes moving
Wet roads: Roads are most slippery in the first few minutes it start to rain.
If you miss an exit on the highway: Go to the next exit and turn around Never attempt to back up

Hand-held phones can be used: To report a fire, a traffic accident or a medical emergency.

Law for child and restraint seats: Must be in a restraint seat anywhere in the car until child is 80lbs. or 8 years old
What do seatbelts do? Keep you from being thrown from the car. Slow your body down with the car. Keep you from sliding on the on the seat.
