Week 4 Lessons

What will you learn ? 1c. Students know electric currents produce magnetic fields and know how to build a simple electromagnet. 1f. Students know that magnets have two poles (north and south) and that like poles repel each other while unlike poles attract each other. 1d. Students know the role of electromagnets in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and earphones.

Let’s talk about magnetism…  Magnetism is a pulling or pushing force caused by the motion of electric charges (remember electrons?).  Magnetism and electricity are related as one can cause the other and vice versa.

Magnets…. Are objects that attract iron, steel, and some other metals. All magnets display the property of magnetism. Magnets can be created using electricity.

Magnetic Fields Magnets create lines of force (pushing and pulling lines) around them. This lines of force combine to form a magnetic field. Do you see the magnet? Can you tell if this is a strong magnet?

Magnetic Poles oA magnet has two poles- called the North and South pole. oLike poles attract and unlike poles repel. Magnetic fields are strongest at the poles!

 The Earth behaves like a magnet because of its iron core.  The Earth’s North and South poles are like the poles of a magnet.  Compasses always orient to Earth’s North Pole.
