Jesus in All His Glory, Luke 9:28-36 The Trek, v. 28 The Transformation, vv The Tabernacles, v. 33 The Testimony, vv

The Trek, v. 28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. Eight days, or six? (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8) He took along His inner circle for more training; Luke 8:51; Gal 2:7-9 Peter – the Apostle to the Jews John – the Revelator, last surviving Apostle James – John’s brother, martyred (Acts 12:1-2) Went up on the mountain to pray Nothing new for Jesus; Luke 5:15-16; 6:12 (before choosing the 12) To pray – total dependence on the Father, seeking His will in this important event Wanted them to see His glory – John 17:22-26

The Transformation, vv And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. Transfigured (μεταμορφοω metamorpho) – Exodus 34:29-35; Ezekiel 1:26- 28; John 1:14; Hebrews 1:1-4 Moses and Elijah – the “Law” and the “Prophets” The Scripture (Hebrew Bible) attests to the Messiah – Luke 24:27; Jesus’ “departure” is THE point - exodus Luke 24:45; Isaiah 53 & Psalm 16:10, the sign of Jonah (Luke 11:29)

Transfiguration: Jesus’ Glory Revealed … His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.... Moses and Elijah who appearing in glory,... Peter and his companions saw His glory. vv Glory (δοχα doxa) Doxology – Jude 24-25; Ephesians 3:20-21, etc. Doxological purpose of the Scriptures – Dispensational Theology Consistent, literal hermeneutics, separation of Church and Israel, Glory of God Chiasm, vv – Jesus’ glory is the center

Chiastic Structure of vv Jesus’ identity, v. 18 (A) Jesus’ identity, v. 35 (A) Jesus’ passion, v. 22 (B) Jesus’ passion, v. 31 (B) Jesus’ glory, v. 26 (C) Jesus’ glory, v. 29 (C)

The Tabernacles, v. 33 And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— not realizing what he was saying. Let us make three tabernacles Tents (σκηνη skene) LLX – The Tabernacle, the “Tent of Meeting” – the place where God dwelt with His people, Exodus 40:34-38 Feast of Tabernacles (a.k.a. Booths or Sukkot) Looks back to God’s provision in the desert, Lev 23:39-43 Looks forward to Him dwelling with His people in the Millennial Kingdom, Zech 14:16-21 “… not realizing what he was saying.” Peter thought the Kingdom had come

The Testimony, vv While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “ This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. The cloud began to “overshadow” them – έπισκιαζω episkiazo LXX translates the Hebrew “shakan” with this word – Shekinah Testimony from the cloud Luke 3:21-22; Deuteronomy 18:15 – “… you shall listen to Him.” The Scriptures and God Himself testify that Jesus is God John 8:24 – Recognize Jesus as God for salvation
