Division Student Sample

What does it mean to divide? Division can be used to find how many are in each group when an amount is shared equally. This is called sharing. 15 / 5 = 3

What does it mean to divide? Another type of division situation is division as repeated subtraction. 15 – 5 = – 5 = 5 5 – 5 = 0 How many times can I subtract 5 from 15 until nothing is left? 3 times 15 5 = 3

What does it mean to divide? Multiplication and division are called inverse operations because division undoes multiplication, and multiplication undoes division. For example, since 2 x 5 = 10, you know 10 x 2 = 5 and 10 x 5 = 2. Also, since 54 6 = 9 and 54 9= 6, then 9 x 6 = 54. *Use division to find a missing factor.

What do I need to know first?

What else do I need to know? Division has patterns (just like multiplication) Estimating means using – Rounding – Compatible numbers – Multiplication
