Children of Veterans Tuition Grant Natural or adopted child of a Michigan veteran who is permanently and totally disabled, deceased, or missing in action.  Student must be a Michigan resident for the 12 months prior to submitting application.  Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Must be at least 17 and less than 26.  Award amount up to $2,800 per academic year for up to four academic years.  Application required – available at

Michigan Competitive Scholarship Program is both merit-based and need-based.  Must have a qualifying score on a standardized test (ACT or SAT). SAT beginning with Class of  Must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.  Must demonstrate financial need.  Must have a high school diploma, GED, or Certificate of Completion.  Award amount for the academic year is $636.

Michigan Tuition Grant Need-based program for students enrolled at an approved independent, non-profit, degree-granting Michigan institution.  Federal processor must receive FAFSA by June 30.  Award amount for the academic year is $1,830.  Limited to tuition and mandatory fees.

Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivors Tuition Grant For children and surviving spouses of Michigan police officers and fire fighters killed in the line of duty.  Child must be less than 21 at the time of the police officer’s or fire fighter’s death.  Must apply for the first time before the age of 26.  Must be at least 16 and less than 26 years old for award.  Must demonstrate financial need.  Limited to tuition only.  Application required – available at

Michigan Nursing Scholarship The Michigan Nursing Scholarship is an award available to Michigan residents enrolled at least half-time at an eligible institution in a program leading to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification, Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN).  Awards are $4,000 per academic year for full-time students, but cannot exceed the cost of attendance minus other grants/scholarships.  Students receiving a full-time scholarship award must agree to work as a direct patient care nurse in an eligible Michigan facility, or as a teacher of nursing at an eligible Michigan postsecondary institution, one year for each year of assistance.  If the work commitment is not fulfilled, the scholarship becomes a loan that must be repaid.

Fostering Futures The Fostering Futures Scholarship provides former foster care youth with scholarship funds for tuition, fees, room/board, books, and supplies/equipment required for enrollment.  Student must have been in foster care on or after age 13.  There is no upper age limit.  Student must be attending a Michigan public or private 4-year college/university or a community college.  Summer 2016 awards will not be available.  Application required – available at

Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) If a student meets the following, he/she may qualify for TIP:  Received Medicaid coverage for 24 months within a 36- consecutive month period between the ages of 9 and high school graduation.  Completed TIP application (via phone or postal mail) to SSG before high school graduation or GED.  Must be less than 20 years of age at time of high school graduation or GED completion.  Must be both a Michigan resident and U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or approved refugee.

College Payment Authorization Form

TIP – Phase I TIP Phase I covers:  The cost of tuition at the current in-district rate at participating Michigan community colleges and up to $250 in mandatory fees per semester.  TIP will cover $99/credit hour ( ) and up to $250 in mandatory fees per semester at a participating degree-granting Michigan independent college. The rate is $102/credit hour.  The cost of tuition at the lower level resident rate at participating Michigan public universities (university must offer an associate program and student enrolls into an associate program). TIP Phase II covers:  Tuition and mandatory fee assistance not to exceed $500 per semester or $400 per term up to a maximum of $2,000 for credits earned in a four-year program at a Michigan degree-granting college or university.  Phase II must be completed within 30 months of completion of Phase I requirements. TIP – Phase II

TIP Guidelines  Students must enroll in college within four years of high school graduation or eligibility is forfeited.  After six years have passed since high school graduation, all remaining benefits are forfeited.  TIP Phase I cannot exceed 80 semester or 120 term credits (24 semester or 36 term credits per academic year).

Future Awarding and Processes  estimated awards: $1,512 for the Michigan Tuition Grant and $575 for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship. These are the minimum amounts set within legislative boilerplate. These are estimated figures that may increase after final projections and a student budget is approved.  FAFSA: We will not receive school code information; therefore, students will need to indicate their institution on the MiSSG student portal. A notification will be generated for them after they complete their FAFSA.  Prior year budget: Budgets will be used for Awarding.
