Italian Renaissance Proto-Renaissance and Early Renaissance

Where are we coming from? Art of the Gothic time period was beautiful and ornate, with complex decorative patterns, but it lacked monumentality. Linear perspective was not understood.

Proto-Renaissance

Madonna and child enthroned with eight angels and four prophets. Cimabue What style does this remind you of? Why? How does Duccio portray space? Any probLems with perspective? Italo/Byzantine Madonna and child enthroned with eight angels and four prophets.

What differences can you see?

Giotto di Bondone Classical style There is still some lack of perspective, as seen by the stacked angels, but he does show depth by overlapping. The difference is he uses modeling of light and shadow. He also adds some bulk to their frames. He fleshes out Mary and the Christ child so they’re not just floating. Classical style

Giotto’s Arena Chapel

Giotto is commissioned He is hired to paint the Arena Chapel with scenes from Christ’s life. What is the first and most obvious difference that you see in this chapel?

Lamentation

The Last Judgment

Simone Martini Annunciation French Gothic style
