MDOT Geotechnical Construction Support Anthony Pietrangelo, P.E. Geotechnical Construction Support Engineer Midwest Geotechnical Conference September 22, 2015

Overview What is it? Why is it needed? Section Overview Roles and Responsibilities Geotechnical Construction Support

Reorganization Reorganized into the Bureau of Field Services Construction Field Services Division Recognized we need a stronger central office presence Alignment, Consistence, Support, Center of Excellence Loss of knowledge and experience Both in our local construction offices and with the contractor’s key staff Geotechnical Construction Support

Geotechnical Services Section Overview

Link Between Construction and Design “Grease that gets the job done” Four main functions Pre-construction document review Field construction support Post construction feedback Geotechnical Training for Inspectors This applies to the Local Agency Program as well Geotechnical Construction Support

Pre-construction document review Cofferdam Submittals Temporary Earth Retention Submittals Drilled Shaft Installation Plans Micropile Construction Submittals MSE Walls (Permanent / Temporary) PDA Testing Reports TIP Testing Reports Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring Plans and Reports Geotechnical Construction Support

Provide field engineering services for construction of driven piles, micropiles and drilled shaft foundations. Provide field engineering services for construction of earth retention systems for deep excavations. Provide instruction for geotechnical construction inspection for structure foundations. Provide a technical resource person for agency verification of pile, micropile, and tieback load testing data. Oversee all PDA, CSL, and TIP Tests Troubleshooting all Geo-construction related problems Same roll if not expanded on Design Build, P3, CMGC Project.

Construction Troubleshooting and Redesign Owner’s Role managing contract and costs Redesign during constructions Geotechnical Redesigns done by MDOT Knowledge Design/Construction/Contract Intimate Knowledge on how the project was built and what issues occur and fixes. Complete the loop back to our consultants End of year meeting with consultants to go over project. Knowledge gap Geotechnical Construction Support

Look and what our program needs are for the upcoming construction season and request training classes as see fit. NHI Classes ( 1 to 2 Geotechnical Classes a year) Develop internal Training Classes as part of our technical training series. Drilled Shaft Inspection Working on Cofferdam Construction and Pile Driving Training – Currently done on a project by project basis. Heavy field presence Develop guidance documents Forms and Checklists E-construction, Paperless State Geotechnical Construction Support Inspector Training

Local Agency Support Provide Pile Driving Assistance to Local Agencies Develop FHWA Modified Gates Formula Pile Driving Charts Provide Saximeters for Local Agencies to use on there project to monitor pile driving. Provide on site assistance/instruction for using saximeters and reading/interpreting pile charts. Provide general pile driving instruction to Local Agencies. Review Local Agency Plans prior to performing the above to head off any foreseeable construction issues. (i.e. Where are your soil borings?) Geotechnical Construction Support Typical Support Functions Continued

Geotechnical Construction Support Lessons Learned Huge hunger for knowledge Once relationships are established staff will continue to use services. Open communication Use of technology has greatly approved this Still need field presence Questions?
