Benedick

“…it is certain that I am loved by all ladies.”

O In 1.1 we see Benedick as a rather arrogant and egotistical character. He seeks a reaction from Beatrice which shows he is quite childish.

“Were you in doubt, sir, that you asked her?” O

O In 1.1 Benedick does exactly what Beatrice and interrupts two important senior figures, Leonato and Don Pedro. He uses a witty joke. This shows that the characters are quite similar.

“…for the prince hath got your Hero”

O Ben misnotes the situation between Don Pedro, Claudio and Hero. This angers Claudio and makes him feel jealous towards Don Pedro. O 2.1

“Honest man…and how is he turned orthography”

O Benedick says this, opposing the idea of marriage as he believes marriage corrupts you. He says this to the boy while they are in the gardens. O 2.2

“The world must be peopled”

O Benedick changes his views on marriage, he gives an excuse for marriage and implies that he will marry and have children. He hides the fact he loves Beatrice as he knows he will be mocked by his friends. O 3.2

“I love nothing in the world so well as you”

O Benedick opens up his feelings towards Beatrice he shows honesty towards her in 4.1. He wants her to how he feels about her and wants to know if she loves him the same way.

“Toothache” O Benedick lies about having a toothache as he does not want to talk about the situation concerning Beatrice. He says it to Don Pedro in 3,2

“Surely I do believe your fair cousin is wrong”

O Benedick is agreeing with Beatrice and goes against his friends. He does this to show that he is devoted to loving Beatrice and picks her over Claudio and Don Pedro.

“Claudio undergoes my challenge”

O He says this to show he is brave and courageous character. He has developed from an arrogant individual to a mature devoted man

“I’ll devise thee brave punishments for him”

O This shows that Benedick has taken charge and decide what goes on. He is the senior figure in the town who everyone looks up to, not Don Pedro

“Peace I will stop your mouth” O Shows that he has changed his views on love, marriage and Beatrice. He is a changed man who is in love and is not ashamed to be. He matured from being shy and embarrassed to open and loving
