15 Logging On Locally to a Computer A user provides a user name and a password. Windows 2000 authenticates the user to verify the identity of the user. Only valid users can gain access to resources and data on a computer. A user can log on to a computer that is a member of a workgroup. A user can log on to a computer that is a member of a domain and not a domain controller.
