How many 5’s are in 230? 

 230 is actually  So, you have 2 (100’s), 3 (10’s), and 0 (1’s)  Let’s practice  What is 456 broken down into 100’s,10’s, and 1’s?  You have 4 (100’s) 5 (10’s) and 6 (1’s)  Understanding place value and multiplication facts are key components for successful division.

 First step:  Does 5 x 100 more or less than 230? If the answer is more you must put a zero in the hundreds column.

 2 nd step: What 5 x 10’s is closest to 230? (Remember we are now working the tens column.)  5 x 10 = 50  5 x 20 = 100  5 x 40 = 200  5 x 50 = 250 (too much!!)  So, now we put the 4 in the tens place. Which represents 5 x 40 = 200.  You then place the 200 underneath the 230 then subtract to find what remains.

 Next we need to find what number goes in the one’s column?  5 x 2 = 10  5 x 3 = 15  5 x 6 = 30  Then you place your 6 in the one’s column. Place 30 underneath the previous remainder. Then subtract.  Your answer is 46.  There are 46 five’s in 230.

Standard Algorithm  Here’s another way to do the same problem.  Same question exist. How many 5’s are in 230?

 First question you ask is does five go into two?  No  So, now you must put a zero above the two.

 Next you asked. How many 5’s go into 23 without going over?  4  Then you place the 4 in the ten’s column, above the 3.  Then you place 20 below the 23 in 230.  The 20 represents 5 x 4.

 After you subtract 20 from 23. Which is 3 you need to bring down the number in the one’s column (zero).

 Then we need to find what goes in the one’s column.  To do that we need to figure out how many 5’s are in 30?  There are six. (5 x 6 = 30)  Then you place the 30 underneath the previous remainder (30) then subtract.  Your answer is 46.
