Let’s remember 2 things

1. Multiplying by 10,100,1000 Multiply by 10 Multiply by 100 Multiply by 1000 Add one 0 Add two 0’sAdd three 0’s since 10 has one 0 since 100 has two 0’s since 1000 has three 0’s Shortcut? S

So how do we work these out? a)730 ÷ 10 = 73 ( a zero was removed) b) ÷ 100 = (two zeros were removed) c) ÷ 1000 = (three zeros were removed)

So, for division we REMOVE the 0’s But what if the whole number does NOT end in 0’s ?

2. Dividing whole numbers with remainders

So how do we work these out? a)18 ÷ 10 = 1 remainder 8 or 1.8 b) 374 ÷ 10 = 37 remainder 4 or 37.4 c) 257 ÷ 100 = 2 remainder 57 or 2.57 d) ÷ 1000 = 81 remainder 352 or

Shortcut Divide by 10Divide by 100Divide by 1000 Move decimal point to the left once Move decimal point to the left twice Move decimal point to the left three times since 10 has one 0 since 100 has two 0’s since 1000 has three 0’s

To Divide by 10,100,1000 REMOVE 0’s or Move point to the left

Examples 23 ÷10 = 2 3 = ÷ 100 = = 250

Examples ÷ 1000 = = ÷ 100 = = 6.24
