Updates on State Assessments Steven Katz Director Office of State Assessment

Updates on State Assessments  New assessments for school year NYSITELL Common Core ELA and Algebra I Regents  Scoring rules for August Regents  3-8 ELA and Math Tests Feedback on 2013 tests Score release for 2013 Spring field testing New reference sheets for math  New Clip Art in Steve’s PowerPoints

NYSITELL  New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners  Will replace the LAB-R as identification tool for English language learners  Piloting starting in August 2013, especially in districts with large ELL populations. (We need you.)  All schools will be administering NYSITELL, in place of LAB-R starting February 1, 2014

Common Core Regents  English Language Arts and Algebra I first administered June 3, 2014  Geometry and Algebra II to begin in June 2015 and June 2016  Information on transition from old to new exams and which students are required to take new exams: math/transitioncc.pdf math/transitioncc.pdf

Scoring August 2013 Regents  For all state exams, teachers may not score their own students’ test papers  For August Regents Exams, teachers may not score a paper if they were the student’s: Summer school teacher, OR school year teacher

Feedback on 3-8 ELA Tests  How did tests compare to expectations?  What did you like about the tests?  What problems were encountered in administration or scoring?  Additional comments or suggestions

Feedback on 3-8 Math Tests  How did tests compare to expectations?  What problems were encountered in administration or scoring?  How might we improve the tests?  Additional comments or suggestions

Results for ELA and Math  Scores will be released during the summer (late July)  Public information (statewide, district, and school aggregates) will be available at:  School and district administrators will receive their results at approximately the same time as the public release

Expectations for 2013 Results  New standards and expectations will likely result in fewer students meeting standards  This does not mean a decline in student learning or educator effectiveness  Results will present a more accurate picture of where students are relative to college and career expectations  Accountability status and educator evaluations will not change based on lower levels of proficiency

Spring Field Testing  Grades 3-8 ELA and Math field tests are being administered June 3 – 7  Field testing is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of the assessments  NYSED’s goal is to require only the minimum amount of field testing needed to build high quality assessments  Cooperation by all schools minimizes the burden on each individual school

New Reference Math Tables  Reference tables for Math Tests in Grades 5-8 have been revised for 2014  Changes based on input from the field and information from PARCC  Reference tables will be sent for students’ use during field tests (June 3-7, 2013)
