Ways to establish norms: Set by management (top down) Set by group consensus (bottom up) Combination of the two (consensus) Defacto norms (no one sets them; they just happen)

The following behavioral and procedural norms come “top down”:

Be quiet and ready to begin class when the bell rings. I can hardly wait to get started!

Respond when someone speaks to you.

Smile and say hello to your teacher and fellow classmates.

Raise your hand to signal that you’d like to speak Give others the respect of listening when they want to say something Keep comments relevant so you contribute to the discussion No sidebar conversations!

Learn the names of everyone in this class. (Let’s review now.)

Respect other students' ideas, comments and opinions.

Congratulate classmates for quality work.

Do not show disrespect with inappropriate sounds, gestures or activities (writing notes, eye rolling, sighing, yawning, smacking lips, etc.).

Do not sleep ( or even appear to be sleeping ) in class… *If you feel like you can’t stay awake, quietly get up, take your notebook, and stand in the back of the room.

Ask politely for things you need or want. “May I please have my make up assignments?” “Could you please fill out this form?”

Follow along when we read together.

Answer all written questions with complete sentences.

And while we’re at it… Let’s talk about THROWING THINGS…

You may have food and drinks in class as long as you follow…

FOOD RULES THE FOOD RULES Follow them and we will all be happy…

1.Do not make any noise opening food during class.

2. No one in the class should be able to hear you chew.

3. You must not leave any crumbs or food remains on or around your desk.

5. Food consumption must not take up more of your attention than class work.

Each individual is entitled to one or two food rule violation warnings, after which that person’s food privileges will be revoked…HOWEVER, CHECKING FOR TRASH AT THE END OF CLASS IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY.

After 3 strikes, you’re out! (meaning after 3 strikes, a class will lose its food privileges)

Keep our classroom —and our campus— neat and clean.

Hats and sunglasses should be removed in class.

Do your homework every day.

Subject transitions will be swift, quiet and orderly.

Be as organized as possible.

Turn off and put away ALL electronic devices during class. (If I see them in use, I will follow the school discipline matrix.)

“Be with me mentally.”

When a substitute teacher is present, all classroom policies still apply and will be enforced.

Participation Your participation grade is based on all the supplies and book checks, your citizenship in class, following all school rules, specific oral assignments, as well as your contribution in general to class activities and discussions. Your participation grade can make the difference between two grades.

Remember! Respect and tolerance are what make any group interaction, whether in an academic, athletic, social or professional environment, run smoothly. Follow the above norms and we will all be healthier, happier and more successful this year!
