CDF Run2b: CCR and CPR Upgrade status Michele_Giunta_INFN-Pisa_&_Università_di_Siena Bologna_22_04_2005

Michele Giunta2 Position in the CDF detector is between Solenoid coil and calorimeter

Michele Giunta5 CPR2_Goals 1) Restore/mantain CPR performances (aging effects). by correcting EM information for dead material losses (magnet coil,...) 4) Shower Max detector only resolves single photons from meson decay till 35 GeV. CPR extends this limit by ~100 GeV. (Photon background subtraction) 5) CPR could improve jet energy resolution: by measuring charged tracks energy before they enter the CEM 3) Improvement: finer segmentation, better S/N. 2) Overcome occupancy problems due to higher luminosity / avoid pileups being more segmented than CEM

Michele Giunta6 The Upgrade timetable CPR/CCR upgrade was first planned for autumn 2005 We did complete it one year in advance !! Oct-dec 2003 : Almost Hardware Material Ordered March 2004 : Internal fibers Kuraray ready May 2004 : All scintillator Tiles ready (From Dubna) June 2004 : Pol.Hi.Tech delivers external fibers May-July 2004 : CPR2 assembly at Argonne First week Sept : CDF is opened, installation begins Third week Nov : CDF is closed, start CR test Second week Dec : Re-start collisions Summer 2005 :There will be a NIM article

Michele Giunta7 UPGRADE parts, institutions & contributions Scintillator Tiles : Dubna & INFN Fibers : INFN CPR2/CCR assembly : ANL, INFN, KCHEP, MSU, and installation Rockefeller, FNAL Signal cables & transition cards : ANL HV system & Control : INFN PMT boxes & optical cables : MSU R&D materials and PMT test : INFN GEANT simulations : INFN PMTs : Tsukuba

Michele Giunta12 Delivered Photoelectrons Specification for phe delivery was to get at least 5 phe/MIP After scintillatior, green fiber (glued for farest tiles), splicing, clear fibers, cables, PMT we get in average ~ 14 phe/MIP Pulse hight spectrum: 10 ADC = 1 phe NEW CPR Cosmics

Michele Giunta13 Occupancy NEW CPR Old New

Michele Giunta14 e /  separation NEW CPR

Michele Giunta16 The End

Michele Giunta17 BK slides begin now

Michele Giunta18 New _ CCR Scintillator-based, has 1 tile / CEM tower. Each CCR module has 225 x 50 x 5 mm tiles Uses the same tungsten bar (8.5 X 0 ). 80% of 50 GeV electrons energy from test- beam is lost in coil+tungsten bar Not yet calibrated nor simulated (CPR2 had priority in commissioning) Crack Detector detects photons in cracks (8% of  coverage) that generates “fake” missing energy.

Michele Giunta19 CPR2 Overview Total n. of channels = 3,072 CPR tile: 12.5 x 12.5 x 2 cm 2x3 (  )/tower Photomultipliers  16 channels per PMT (R5900)  192 HV channels  CAEN HV SY CCR 54 2,592 CPR Wedge Total TILES WLS fiber into groove, spliced to clear fiber at tile exit, routed to optical connector Specs want CPR to give >5 pe per MIP at PMT (>10 pe at tile exit due to splicing + connector + 5m clear fiber) We get 16,

Michele Giunta22 CPR2 _ Calibration _1 LERS: (linear energy response) Equalizes tiles for uniform output to same signal Absolute calibration: done, but there is no analisys using CPR2 because Production is not yet updated. Eache tile il easily calibrated with MIP in 5 minutes of collider data.
