Math & Measuring for Quilting Measure twice, cut once!!

Fabric is sold in yards 36” in 1 yard The amount of yards of fabric you purchase determines the length of fabric you have Most fabric is always 42-44” wide! (selvage to selvage) Seam allowances for quilting are ALWAYS ¼”

What Do You Know? Ruler & Fraction Refresher Worksheet

Adjusting the pattern Standard Measurements Twin81” x 106” Full96” x 106” Queen102” x 112 King118” x 112”

Ways to change the size Change the number of blocks Change the size of the blocks Change the number of sashing strips Change the width of the sashing strips Change the number and/or the width of the borders

What’s the answer… If you find a pattern for a twin, but you want your quilt to be a full, does the length change? No Does the width change? Yes How much does the width change? 15” If the twin size pattern is made up of 7 blocks across by 10 blocks long, there is no sashing, but there are 2 borders, what could you do to change the size of this pattern to a full? Change the number of blocks, if the blocks are 5”, you will need to add 3 blocks to the width

Let’s Review Quilt Math Your first row has 10 blocks. Your seam allowance measures ½ inch instead of ¼ inch. How much will your first row be off? Your quilt top measures 80 in x 108 in. How many yards of fabric would you need to purchase? How will your backing be pieced together?
