NPHS DANCE CLASSES Mrs. Carolan

Course Description This class will introduce the student to a variety of dance styles. Students will develop skills in dance technique, choreography, group work, and performance; while increasing their flexibility, strength, and stamina in physical fitness. Students will also gain knowledge in dance history and philosophies through written work.

Course Information PE Dance Class – 10 credits of physical education Objectives: To condition the body for dance by developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. To develop movement vocabulary To provide the student with the opportunity to develop themselves through dance as a unified whole- emotionally, intellectually, & physically. To glimpse through the philosophical and historical development of dance through time.

Major Course Topics Body Conditioning Balance Flexibility Performance Styles: Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, Latin Jazz, Musical Theatre, Modern, and more… Mastering Choreography Developing Choreography

Student Performance Expectations Being in class on time and ready to work to their full potential. Wearing appropriate dance attire to class everyday. Willingness to except constructive criticism. Willingness to challenge themselves outside of their “norm”. Treating everyone in the classroom with RESPECT.

Homework Online quizzes thru datawise These will be assigned every time we learn a new style of dance. 5 per semester I allow one week for students to take quizzes online before I take them off line.

Grading Policy Each student can earn up to 10 participation points each day they attend class dressed appropriately, with their hair back, not chewing gum, wearing the appropriate clothing (including shoes), and seated when roll is called. If a student has an excused absence they can make up their points by doing an alternative assignment. See Rubric on teacherwebpage…

Expected State Learning Requirement Participation in our Spring Dance Concert Technical Rehearsals: April 23 & 24 2:30-8:00pm Shows: April 25, 26, & 27 7:00pm show, 5:30 Call Skills learned: Memorizing of Choreography, Performance ready Execution, Performance in front of a live audience.

What to expect around Concert Time I collect donations for concert t-shirts & costume rentals ($20) All shirts will include the dancers name on the back and they will wear attire at school the week of concert and during the finale number. Dancers will be in three routines. A small group number A full class number Finale I will do my best to costume the above two through our inventory. Other items may need to be pulled from home. A list will be provided.

How can you HELP your child succeed? If your child has an excused absence, ask if they have completed a participation make-up report. Students have one week from their absence to turn in their assignment. Allow time for your child to practice routines at home. Quizzes are uploaded onto my teacherwebsite at least 24 hours in advance. Help them plan their Outside Performance Critique. Students have from the first day of class until January 11 th to complete this assignment.
