Schedules What can they do for your school to meet the needs of every student?

Schedules can mean… Increased levels of time and instruction are given when the student is not being successful. Response is timely. Response is increasingly directive, not invitational. Response is SYSTEMATIC.

So…have you created a schedule that guarantees students will receive additional opportunities for learning through extra time and support in a systematic way, regardless of who the teacher might be? DuFour & DuFour, 2010

EXAMPLES Scheduling Concepts From Schools Across the Country

Adlai Stevenson High School – Illinois Eight 50-Minute Periods Students take six classes (50 minutes each). Freshmen and sophomores have one study hall (50 minutes) to provide time for intervention. Juniors and seniors who pass all classes have one free 50- minute period. Freshmen have 25 minutes for advisory period and 25 minutes for lunch Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who pass all classes get 50 minutes for lunch. Each student receives progress monitoring every 3 weeks.

Cinco Ranch High School – Texas Seven Periods Freshmen must enroll in one study hall to provide time for intervention. NHS students provide tutoring. Intensive study-skills class is for designated incoming freshmen. Target math study hall. Before- and after-school tutoring. Each teacher tutors twice a week as part of his/her duty. Progress reports or report cards are distributed every 3 weeks. On-line credit recovery is a course offered after school or during summer school.

Monticello High School – Virginia Seven Period Block Tuesday and Thursday: Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. – Periods 1, 3, and 7 meet for 90 minutes with 55 minutes for lunch. Wednesday and Friday: Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. – Periods 2, 4, and 6 meet for 90 minutes with 55 minutes for lunch. Tuesday-Friday: Period 5 meets for 55 minutes Mondays: – Tutorial period from 8:50-9:30 a.m. is required for any student not passing classes or requested by teacher. – Classes begin at 9:30 a.m. Periods 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 meet for 50 minutes with 35 minutes for lunch.

Whittier Union High School – California Six Periods-Modified Block Monday: 6-period days with 48 minutes each period Tuesday-Friday: Modified block of three classes for 100 minutes, for first 5 weeks Beginning sixth week, students who pass all classes with at least a C are released after 80 minutes for break, longer lunch, or early dismissal. Student who do not pass classes with a C or better remain for intensive tutoring and small-group work.

Bernice McNaughton High School – Canada Supplemental math and English class based on proficiency assessment. Math and science lunch labs. RED (Remediation/Enrichment Days) after common assessments. Directed learning for 30 minutes at end of day for study, homework completion, tutoring. Hired full-time guided study teacher. Grade-12 students can carry lighter load if they agree to perform tutoring twice a week.

Lakeridge Junior High – Utah School moved from seven-period day to modified A/B block with FLEX time. Students enroll in four 80-minute periods. 30 minutes are carved out Tuesday through Friday for FLEX time. Students who are failing must report to mandatory tutoring. All others receive enrichment options or free time. Those with continuing academic difficulties can be assigned to a double period of language arts or math. Intercession

Prairie Start Middle School – Kansas 8-period day: 45 minute periods, with 25 minutes for lunch Students devote one period to guided study and physical education on alternating days. Study Island: Web-based math and reading program Assigned to Learning Lab with designated nagger. READ 180 in place of an elective PACE: After-school tutoring 4 days each week. PTA provides bus one day each week. Every teacher receives color-coded achievement data and the transition plan from previous grade-level team for every student. Year begins with time for teachers to review info.

Jane Adams Junior High – Illinois 9-period day, 40 minutes each, with one period reserved for lunch. Students missing assignments are notified on Friday that they will be assigned to guided study instead of lunch, if there work is not completed by Monday. If Guided Study does not resolve their difficulties, they are assigned to Fast Track (after-school tutoring) 3 days each week. Transportation is provided. If Fast Track does not resolve their difficulties, they are removed from an elective and assigned to an intensive study-skills class for 9 weeks. Extended reading and math courses are 80 and 60 minutes.
