High, Medium and Low Stakes Assessments  Objective: To provide you with an understanding of the issues involved with developing and delivering surveys, quizzes, and tests as they impact low, medium and high stakes assessments.

Low Stakes Assessments  Decisions: if any, are easily reversed  ID individual: not important  Proctoring: none  Options: define further study  Item & test issues: minor  Created by: subject matter experts  Statistics checked: occasionally if at all

Examples - Low Stakes Assessments  motivates learning  guides student to relevant knowledge  surveys opinions  self-assessment  quizzes to promote thinking  skills gap analysis

Medium Stakes Assessments  Decisions: can be reversed  ID individual: important  Proctoring: yes  Options: pass, fail or work harder  Item & test issues: takes time  Created by: subject matter experts  Statistics checked: from time to time

Examples - Medium Stakes Assessments  determines knowledge and grade levels  school, college and university tests  determines training requirement  provides management reports  determine pool of skills (knowledge inventories)

High Stakes Assessments  Decisions: very difficult to reverse  ID individual : very important  Proctoring: constant during test  Options: pass or fail  Item & test issues: significant  Created by: subject matter experts  Statistics checked: by psychometrician

Examples - High Stakes Assessments  Test is significant to life of candidate  Certification (e.g. nursing, realtor, CNE, MSE, etc.)  Job interviews  Grants permission to do something  Legal liabilities should be considered  Verifies defined set of abilities
