Presentation transcript:

NUMBERS By the end of the year…  Count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20  Recognise, read and write numbers to 20  Place numbers in order  Say which number is one more and one less than a given number  Using quantities and objects, they add 2 single digit numbers and count on to find the answer  Using quantities and objects, they subtract 2 single digit numbers and count back to find the answer  They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

SHAPE, SPACE & MEASURES By the end of the year…  Size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. (Comparing quantities and objects to solve problems).  They recognise, create and describe patterns.  They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them. Children use everyday language to talk about:

 The children work in groups  They carry out practical activities  Use ICT games (Education City)  Record on activity sheets and in their books  Discuss with peers and class teacher  Teachers take photographic evidence and add this to the online learning journey, Tapestry.  Sing number songs How do we teach these ELG?

Getting it Right Children can often recite numbers up to ten, twenty or more by habit without any other concepts behind this. The difficult part is teaching children to associate, for example, the number 3 with three items. This can take a long time but with constant play, demonstration and even trial and error, your child will successfully be able to bring you one book, and two pencils etc. means 3

Helping At Home  Looking for and name shapes at home and in the environment.  Talk about 3D (solid) shape names -packaging on food items is an excellent way.  Junk model with 2D and 3D shapes –can you name them all?  Make pictures with different shapes.  Involve children in cooking. Look at numbers on scales and measuring jugs.  Measure and compare feet sizes and height of other family members.  Shopping activities –real or pretend –use real money to help identify coins and weight.

Education City All children have a login for Education City. There are many activities which consolidate the learning that is taking place in the classroom.

Home Learning Pack Please feel free to take a home learning pack which provides further ideas on how to support your child with maths at home.
