Magnetic Earth

Magnetic Fields Magnetic fields are areas where an object exhibits a magnetic influence. The fields affect neighboring objects along things called magnetic field lines. A magnetic object can attract or push away another magnetic object.

Magnetic Poles Magnetic poles are the points where the magnetic field lines begin and end. Field lines converge or come together at the poles. At Earth’s North and South Poles the Field Lines come together.

Earth’s Magnetic Field The Earth acts like a huge magnet, creating a huge magnetic field. Earth’s outer liquid core is filled with iron (Fe). Helps protect us from space radiation.

The Dynamo Effect The flowing metal in the outer core creates the dynamo effect. Dynamos create large magnetic fields The region of magnetic protection is called the magnetosphere.
