Synthesis Equation Prior knowledge + Textual Information = New ideas New perspectives New opinions New insight … This is synthesis! *Synthesis is an ongoing process. As new knowledge is acquired, it is synthesized with prior knowledge to generate new ideas.

You Got This! Skills Needed For Synthesis The ability to: Summarize Paraphrase Compare & contrast Separate fact from opinion Draw inferences based on facts presented Evaluate information to form your own conclusions

Some Metaphoric Comparisons Synthesis = A Journey You begin with prior knowledge of a topic, gain new knowledge about that topic from a variety of sources, combine and analyze this information, and at your final destination, evaluate the information and form an opinion.

Synthesis = A Puzzle You collect the pieces of information from various sources and find connections to put together the entire picture.

Synthesis = Scaffolding Since newly acquired information should be synthesized with previously learned information, you should activate your prior knowledge of a topic which has been studied, researched, or discussed in class. Make connections between the new and prior knowledge.

From Bullying To GenocideFrom Bullying To Genocide Activity: Walk around the room and respond to the quotes hanging up. You may respond to the quote directly and/or others’ responses. All responses MUST be respectful and non-offensive. Then, come back for a class discussion.

Do Now: Watch the following news clip and then in your journal, write what you think the clip divulges about ignorance and hate, as well as how people deal with each.

Pyramid of Hate

Activity: (Pairs) Each pair will receive a few slips of paper with an event or situation detailed on it. With your partner, figure out where on the Pyramid of Hate the event/situation would fall. Come up to the board and tape it on in the appropriate place. Explain your answer in a class discussion.

Let’s Synthesize… Read the articles provided (or any text you find on your own) Synthesize the information (Filter the newly learned info. through your prior knowledge and come up with new information.) Discuss the following questions: -Where does hate come from? (Learned or Ingrained?) -How do people deal with hate? -How would the world (at least the provided situations) be different had people stepped in? *Discuss. Each group should turn in 1 set of discussion notes.
