Why?  On Cash, “I have seen him spend a hour trimming out a wedge like it was glass he was working, when he could have reached around and picked up a dozen sticks and drove them into the joint and made it do.” 87  What drives Cash?  On Anse, “He promised her… She wanted it. She come from there. Her mind was set on it.” 89  What does it say about Anse that he is adamant to go to Jefferson?  On Addie, “Wherever she went, she has her reward in being free of Anse Bundren.” 92  Why does Tull say this? What indictment does Tull make on Anse’s character?

Darl  “It’s not your horse that’s dead, Jewel.” 94  “I cannot love my mother because I have no mother. Jewel’s mother is a horse.” 95  Why does Darl define his mother in this way?
